I spent some time at McQueen as an artwork assistant during the evolution of his a/w 08 collection. I was lucky enough to meet and work in the studio with Lee, as he was known by friends and colleagues. The hours were long, and at times it was intensely stressful but it was an experience I now cherish. I had spent days on this particular large scale pencil drawing that had to incorporate tudor roses , an eagle and ribbons. It got the thumbs up initially and was to be used as a scarf or Jacquard only to be discarded in the end when the themes of the show were changed.
A few weeks ago following the tragic news I met up for drinks with a few of my McQueen buddies and was informed he had gone back to my drawing for his final pre collection. When I got home I went to the website thinking I’d find a small section of my design, only to discover it covered an entire gown. It meant a hell of a lot to me.
