Raf Simons Dior’s New Artistic Director

There has been gossip and rumors aplenty since the sacking of
Galliano after his anti-Semitic rant in a Paris bar last year . It has
now be announced that the 44 year old former Jil Sander Creative
Director, Raf Simons, will be his successor and assume his new role as
of tomorrow.

After the firing of  Mr Galliano a long time collaborator, Bill Gaytten,
was appointed a temporary replacement at the fashion house, going on to
create two collections for the Christian Dior.Unfortunately the
handover wasn’t as smooth as they’d hoped with his haute couture 2011
collection receiving wide criticism from the fashion press. His 2012
couture collection showed more promise but the design house was clearly
missing its flamboyant former designer.  It was obvious that they needed
to find a permanent designer who could create the iconic looks they
have been renowned for, but their decision to go with Simon will be a
surprise for many.  Not only has he been celebrated for his minimalistic
style and in particular his colour blocking, he is also vastly
inexperienced when it comes to the opulence of couture designing.  He
has admitted to be slightly fearful of his new position stating,
I
find it very challenging to rethink couture.’ That said he has always
had an interest and respect for the work of Dior, particularly the early
period of his career and has an understanding of the relevance of
creating couture shows.

His new responsibilities will include overseeing Christian
Dior’s advertising campaigns as well as offering thought into further
creative areas for the brand .He said: ‘
I’m someone who takes responsibility. I’m not an isolated person. The more I connect to people, the more I have the feeling that things work.’
